pp240. 1953 Everest mountaineer George Band's own copy of an illustrated anthology with contributions from Everest pioneers including George Mallory, Tenzing Norgay, Peter Boardman and Chris Bonington. First published in 1993, this edition was expanded to include the climbs of the 1990's and is near fine copy in photographic card wrappers with Band's typical method of annotation through post it notes - with manuscript jottings on - stuck to page edges. Additionally Band has worked his way through the list of Everest mountaineers at the end of the book, highlighting the British climbers of the mountain. Laid in, a letter from the Alpine Club Library reminds Band about a book he had left behind the previous day. From the collection of the English mountaineer George Band, the youngest member of the first successful team to climb Mount Everest in 1953. Band was President of the Mountaineering Club at Queen's College, Cambridge where his exceptional Alpine record caught the eye of John Hunt, who put him in charge of radio equipment on the Everest expedition. Band's finest achievement is generally regarded as the first ascent of Kangchenjunga in 1955. Despite pursuing a career in oil exploration he continued to climb all over the world, serving as president of the Alpine Club and the British Mountaineering Council, and publishing several books on mountaineering.
